A few (bad) photos of my Napoleonic figures. I came across a great set of old school rules called 'Muskets & Marshals' which upon reading took me right back to my teenage years when I took
Art in some epic games at Stoke Wargames Group.
The rules call for 24 figure infantry and 12 figure cavalry units with artillery batteries being represented by single guns.
I still need to get more units on the table to be happy with the 'look' that I'm after but I think that's the curse of every gamer.... never enough toys!
My French force consists of 8 infantry units, 2 cavalry units and 4 guns a with my combined Austrian / Russian force consisting of more or less the same ( with a little more artillery )
I'm currently working on more Russian infantry but also need to get light infantry units for all forces sorted at some point!
I've been slowly rebuilding my WWII forces up over the past few months using fool old school 1/72nd plastics and this week I had a little time to start a Bolt Action game. I'm enjoying the rule set, it's simple, easy to learn and fun to play ( even solo as I am doing ) . Here's a few pictures of the game so far. Enjoy.
Ok, just a quick post to let anyone who's interested know that I will be making a return to WWII gaming in the very near future!
My latest project will be based upon using good old 1/76th scale .... or 20mm plastics and I will be using a set of mega simple rules. Maybe I'm just hankering after my youth but I'm really looking forward to it!

Having read some of the results of the '20 Questions' which has been going around just lately I thought I'd ask a few questions of myself (as I really can't be arsed to answer all the original questions!)

1. Favourite wargaming eras:

My first dabble as a kid was WWII closely followed by Napoleonic.... though I've never found a rule system that I could 100% stick to for either era. This usually causes me to become extremely bored and hence I tend to switch constantly between the two.

2. Wargaming era / genre / scale I'd like to try in the future:

I would like to try ACW in 10mm at some point. Whether that will ever happen is anyone's guess.

3. Least favourite gaming era / genre:

Fantasy ... I just don't get it and it's players are usually quite disturbed. I once overheard a conversation at some show or other where two Goth types were seriously discussing 'spells'...... Wargamers shouldn't be associated with these people. 'Play historical games or get out' would be my club motto....If I had a club....Which I haven't. ....Also anyone that plays sports-based figure games .... ???? WTF is that about?

4. Favourite General:

Napoleon.

5. Favourite author / book:

Yesterday I received the sample packs of German and US riflemen from Pendraken and I'm mightily impressed! This is the first time I've seen 10mm scale 'in the flesh' so to speak and already I'm hooked. The detail is superb, the quality of the casting is excellent and I love the actual scale of the things.
So, I think that's decision made as far as my WWII gaming goes and I'll be changing over to 10mm in the very near future and my Valiant 1/72nd will be making their way to ebay.
I'll try and get these painted up soon but if anyone has any info on US infantry uniform colours then please let me know (preferably Humbrol enamels or Tamiya acrylics)
Today sees the start of the new football season and my beloved Stoke City are up against new boys Reading away from home.
With a few new signings (including a US 'soccer' player!) here's hoping for a good season.
Having decided to take the 'hex' route for my WWII gaming (using Mmemoir '44 rules) I also decided that a change of scale was in order so today I ordered a pack of German and US riflemen from Pendraken.
I've been a long time admirer of their 10mm mini's so I'm looking forward to seeing them in the flesh and to having a bash at painting them up!

So, we'll see what they're like when I receive them and all being well my painted up Valiant figures and my few 20mm AFV's may be heading for ebay in the very near future.

I'll post my thoughts on the 10mm figs when they arrive on my doorstep!

I have recently become very disillusioned with both my Napoleonic and my WWII projects mainly down to the fact that I really can't find a rule set that gives me the right type of 'feel' I want from a wargame. This being the case I have done very little by way of either playing or painting during the past few weeks. However, I did come across Memoir'44 which I have been playing online and this has been a real find in so far as it has re-ignited my enthusiasm for gaming.

The game is simple but strangely addictive and I have really enjoyed playing it over the tinterweb. Now Lee over on his excellent blog has successfully transferred the boardgame Command & Clolours Napoleonics onto his tabletop and this really got me to thinking as to whether I should do the same with Memoir'44. It would mean starting over, possibly a switch in scale and I'm currently considering 6,10 or 15mm figures for this project. I'm lucky enough to have a permanent 8' x 4' table so with the smaller scale figures I can imagine some pretty big games being played! .I will also be altering my tabletop or laying a new 'hex' surface of some type so if anyone has any suggestions for this then please let me know!

Anyway, I'm reall looking forward to getting started on this so stay tuned for progress reports in the near future!

Well, it's that time of year again, another year older and none the wiser. Yes, today I turn 48 ...... 48!...Where the hell did that come from? Surely I only left school a couple of years ago?

Between the ages of about 15 - 25 I was a really keen cyclist, I loved my old 70's road bike and rode for miles every week until one fateful night when my bike was stolen from the garage. By this time I was driving (17 years old and a first time passer....oh yes!) and at 22 my son was born so time for myself and cycling had long gone out the window.

For years I've threatened to get back into road biking and constantly mentioned it to my wife especially last year when I saw my now grown up son do a charity bike ride from Stoke-London-Paris.

Anyway, my lovely Wife has presented me with this for my Birthday....

Aint she a beauty? ..... I'm really looking forward (if not a little nervous!) to get back on the road and I just hope I can remember how to ride!!!

As well as the bike the wife has also bought me the cycling shoes, shirt, leggings......... Don't ask me what I've done to deserve all this as I haven't a clue............Either that or she's after something. Anyway, thanks to my lovely wife for a great Birthday and here's to getting fit again!

UPDATE:

I decided to change the pedals as the ones shown are a nightmare trying to get your foot into! and I couldn't use my new cycling shoes with them either.

I decided on Shimano pedals which came with cleats ......... £45 for a pair of pedals !!!!! I nearly went to the foot of our stairs.

Took my first ride today and also decided to start a new blog dedicated to my attempt to return to road cycling!

A few of you may know that I'm currently putting together a fast play set of WWII rules which will appear here on the blog at some point in the future. I'm all for people sharing rule ideas and I really enjoy reading other gamers rule sets.
The guy over at The Tabletop Gamer blog has just put up a couple of sets of his own rules (Modern Naval ans WWII Air Warfare) and they're well worth a look so go check them out! ....... http://freerules.blogspot.co.uk/
Battlescalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13530786317286215390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7332860336439325980.post-76979034503629676142012-07-11T04:28:00.000-07:002012-07-11T07:30:42.193-07:00Play testing and More Play Testing!

Besides trying to get more stuff painted and built I've been busy running a few mini games up in the den in which I've been testing out and expanding my home-brew rule set. It's great fun trying to write your own rules as obviously they can be manipulated until you get the type of game that 'you' want. It can also be quite frustrating.......... especially when you don't take notes and that great idea you had an hour ago just disappears into oblivion. The other bugbear is including a rule that seems to make perfect sense in one situation only to turn out to be completely irrelevant in another!

Anyhow, here's a few pictures of the game I'm currently farting about with.........
After a horrendous 9 hour drive through rain, floods and traffic jams, my wife and I finally arrived home from our holiday in South Wales over the weekend.

Even though we expected the break to be a complete washout we were pleasantly surprised with the weather during our stay and only had one really bad day during our week away. The holiday was just what we needed and we both enjoyed a relaxing time in a beautiful part of the country.

Just before I left for our holiday a took delivery of an ebay gem........

The book that started it all!

I can't tell you exactly how strange it felt to flip through this books' pages again and the memories that this particular book bought back for me.
I was 10 years old again. It was a hot Summers' day in 1974 and I remember seeing this title jump out at me from the shelf of my local library in Meir, Stoke-on-Trent.
I had always loved models, kits and of course figures but upon opening this very book I realised for the very first time that what I was interested in was 'justified' (for want of a better word), by the very fact that 'adults' also found my pastime interesting enough to write about it!
I must have had this book out on loan from the library continually over the next few years and it inspired me greatly.
It seems very strange looking though it now. I remember thinking how complicated it all sounded with talk of 'morale' and 'melee' ....... words I didn't even know the meaning of at that tender age!
I (and I'm sure many, many more gamers) owe Mr Featherstone a huge thank you for introducing me to this fantastic hobby which we all love.

My second holiday read was this one......

I've had this one lying around for ages but have only just got around to reading it. If you're interested (as I am) in the Normandy Campaign then I can't recommend this book highly enough. Even though it explains the landings in a straight forward, factual manner (with a good selection of maps etc) the book is also made up of mini-snippets of personal accounts from the brave men who fought there. These accounts are really quite moving and even at times amusing and it really captures the mood of the forces involved in the campaign.
A very, very good read and highly recommended..

Well that's the holiday over with for this year (though we are hoping to get away for another week if funds allow!) and time to get back to the wargames table. Still busy figure painting / basing at the moment and I also have plans to get some more scenery projects on the go so stay tuned.
Well it's that time of year again and the wife and I are packing our little car all ready to head off to Tenby in South Wales for a week of doing absolutely nothing! ..... Heaven!

After the severe flash floods we had today here in County Durham It will be nice to get away even though I'm very doubtful of getting the glorious sunshine we got when we visited Tenby 2010.

Even so, a change of scenery and a week away is all good in my book!

I'll be sneaking my modelling kit in with the luggage in the hopes of getting a couple of kits built while I'm away ........... but, shhhhhhh, .........don't tell the wife!

Now I'm the first to admit that in the past I've made it known that I am not a great fan of the Rapid Fire rule set.

My own views on this system have been based on the few games I have played and it seemed that in these games armour appeared King of the table and infantry seemed to be more of an afterthought than a main arm. The rules themselves, or should I say the mechanics of the rules, I always thought were my type of system, fun, simple to grasp and easy to play and it has always griped me why I found such a hugely popular rules set so annoying!

So, over the past few days I have been reading up on the rules again and after visiting various websites I decided to download the Rapid Fire for Rookies free play sheet and give them another go.

Although I'm still a way off being where I want to be as far as my figures / models and scenery collection go I was still able to muster enough goodies to put on a small game to try the rules out once more. Here's a few pics I took at the beginning of the game .........

I haven't done a blow by blow account of the game but my verdict? ............. I loved it.

So, in answer to the charges of not giving a rule set a proper chance, and being too quick to judge? ........ Guilty on both counts. The free version of the rules I used are of course a slimmed down version of the full set but after this enjoyable game I'm very keen to expand my forces and my knowledge of the Rapid Fire rules. I'm looking forward to more RF games very soon!
Almost there!

After spending a couple more hours on the AFV's they at last are nearing completion. Following a wash with diluted black acrylic and being allowed to dry I drybrushed the models in a lighter shade of their original base coat colour.......
So far I'm quite pleased with the results (I'm never 100% happy with anything I paint!) I've still a bit of work to do on the tracks and wheel sections but they're almost there.
I'm looking forward to getting these and the British Churchill finished up and to giving them an outing on the table.
The next question is to base or not to base?
Battlescalehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13530786317286215390noreply@blogger.com0
